Talking about the future: will and be going to
When talking about the future we can use will or going to.
We use will to:
- To make factual statements about the
future (para construir oraciones basadas en hechos que tienen un respaldo cientifico por ejemplo estudios, estadísticas, etc. Factual significa objetivo, que se atiene a los hechos.)
e.g. There will be a solar eclipse in 2016.
- To make predictions, especially when they
are based on our own thoughts or beliefs. (para hacer predicciones basadas en nuestros pensamientos o creencias)
e.g. I
think you´ll do well
in your exams.
- To make offers (para hacer ofrecimientos)
e.g. I´ll carry your bags.
- To make promises (para hacer promesas)
e.g. I´ll always love you.
- To make instant decisions (para tomar decisiones en el mismo momento en que se está hablando o algo sucede)
e.g. Look there is Tommy! I´ll go and say hello.
Structure:
Affirmative:
- S + will + V + C
e.g. She will be angry
Negative:
- S + won´t (will not) + V + C
e.g. I won´t tell anybody
Interrogative:
- Will + S + V + C?
e.g. Will you be at home?
We use going to to:
- To make predictions, especially when they
are based on what we can see. (para hacer predicciones basadas en lo que podemos ver)
e.g. Look
at the man! He´s
going to jump in the river.
- To talk about our intentions or
decisions. (para hablar de nuestras intenciones, decisiones u planes)
e.g. I´m going to invite
her to my party.
Structure:
Affirmative:
e.g. They are going to go swimming
Negative:
- S + be + not (am not, isn´t, aren´t) + V + C
e.g. I am not going to study medicine
Interrogative:
- Be + S +going to + V + C?
e.g. Is she going to quit her job?
